Aoyama Gakuin University Royal Sounds Jazz Orchestra Specially Selected Band

The big band from Aoyama Gakuin University is celebrating 50 years this year. With over 50 members, the versatile band covers across musical genres, from classics like Count Basie to Gil Evans to Incognito. Incorporating funk, fusion, and rock into the performances, the award-winning band is looking forward to the next 50 years.

Formed in 1998, the Tokyo-based, vintage-sound Jump/Jazz Band has been touring extensively. 2015 marked its appearance at FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL '15 with Bloodest Saxophone feat. Jewel Brown, as well as a tour in Hong Kong to a repeatedly sold out crowd. With 10 albums to their credit, the band is not stopping any time soon - their newest album "BLOW BLOW ALL NIGHT LONG" released in June 2017 is another rockin' piece!

The trio from Luxembourg came together in 2012 after graduating from prestigious music schools that include Berklee. With a shared love of jazz, they combine progressive Jazz, classical, and rock to co-create their unique style. Aside from presenting its music at many Festivals and venues including the Hong Kong International Jazz Festival and Paris Jazz Festival a la Cite, Dock In Absolute will also release its new album, recorded at the Bauer Studios, under the Label CAM JAZZ.

Afro Begue

The afrobeat band led by Djembe master Omar Gaindefall began in 2010, with the concept "Begue," or "Enjoy" in Wolof. Their original sound mixes the traditional style of the Senegalese "Griot" with raggae, jazz, and pop. 2016 marked a milestone, when the band performed for Mr. Mamady Keita and received accolaids. As the bridge between Senegal and Japan, the band continues to explore new forms of African music.

The trio plays jazz influenced in part by music from the Balkan countries, Northern Africa, India, and Afro-Cuban. With their innovative rhythms that make a great playground for improvisations, EYM creates a very personal and captivating universe, respecting the masters of jazz history, inviting the crowd to take a journey.

Hungarian born Romani/ Musician Robi Botos was raised in a musical family and is largely self-taught. He began his musical career as a child growing up in Budapest playing drums and percussion, and took up piano at age seven. Having caught the ear of Jazz great Oscar Peterson shortly after immigrating to Canada, he quickly became his protégé. The resulting fusion of North American Bebop, Hard Bop, and Modern Jazz along with the deep tradition of Folk music in Eastern Europe and Romantic Classical music, has formulated a sound and approach that is formidable and unsurpassed. Musicians from Branford Marsalis to Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, and many more consider Robi to be one of the greats on the piano. His 2015 second album "Movin' Forward" earned Robi the 2016 JUNO Award for Jazz Album of the Year.

Andrea Motis is considered a revelation in Spanish jazz. Her idols are Louis Armstrong and Chet Baker, and the young trumpeter/singer from Barcelona has been dazzling admirers along with Joan Chamorro since 2012 and the day Quincy Jones picked her out to bring her up onstage. And you have to admit the young lady has a stunning freshness alongside her natural ease and spontaneity.
Andrea’s first album for the legendary Impulse! label is Emotional Dance.
Impulse! reaches out to a new audience with Andrea with the claim that, today like yesterday, Jazz is cool!
